Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must fulfil the following eligibility conditions as on the closing date of the application (14.06.2026):
1. Nationality / Citizenship
The candidate must be either:
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 01.01.1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
2. Educational Qualification
For the post of Assistant Loco Pilot, candidates must possess one of the following qualifications from a recognized Board/Institution:
- Matriculation/SSC/10th pass plus ITI from recognised institutions of NCVT/SCVT in the trades of Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature & Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic.
- (OR) Matriculation/SSC/10th pass plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) in the trades mentioned above.
- (OR) Matriculation/SSC/10th pass plus Three years Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile Engineering (or combination of these streams) from a recognised Institution.
- (OR) Degree in the above Engineering disciplines in lieu of Diploma.
Note: Candidates awaiting results of their final examination of the prescribed educational/technical qualification are NOT eligible to apply. The qualification must be completed on or before the closing date (14.06.2026).

For Assistant Loco Pilot, the age limit is 18 to 30 years. Candidates must have been born between 02.07.1996 and 01.07.2008 (both dates inclusive) for UR & EWS.

Application Fee
The application fee must be paid online through Internet Banking, Debit/Credit Cards, or UPI. Fee Refund: The examination fee will be refunded to the candidate's Aadhaar-seeded bank account upon appearing in CBT-1.

In addition to the basic pay, candidates receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), and Running Allowance (specific to loco running staff). Exam Pattern (CBT-1, CBT-2 & CBAT)
The RRB ALP examination consists of two stages of Computer Based Tests (CBT-1 and CBT-2) followed by a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). The detailed pattern is as follows:
Stage 1: CBT-1 (Qualifying in Nature)
CBT-1 is a screening exam for shortlisting candidates for CBT-2. Marks obtained in CBT-1 will NOT be counted for final merit. Shortlisting will be done at 15 times the number of vacancies, based on normalized marks and merit among candidates who chose the same RRB.

Stage 2: CBT-2 (Merit Deciding)
CBT-2 is divided into Part A and Part B. Part A determines the merit, while Part B is qualifying in nature (requires 35% marks). Total duration is 2 hours 30 minutes.

Minimum Qualifying Marks for Part A: UR/EWS - 40%, OBC-NCL - 30%, SC - 30%, ST - 25%. For Part B: 35% for all candidates irrespective of category.
Negative Marking: There is a negative marking of 1/3rd mark for every wrong answer in both CBT-1 and CBT-2. There is NO negative marking in CBAT.
Stage 3: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
Candidates equal to 8 times the number of ALP vacancies will be shortlisted for CBAT based on their marks in Part-A of CBT-2 (provided they qualify Part-B). The CBAT is qualifying in nature.

Medical Standards (A-1 Category)
The post of Assistant Loco Pilot has stringent medical standards. Candidates must pass the prescribed medical fitness test conducted by the Railway Administration. The medical standard for ALP is A-1.

LASIK Surgery Restriction: Candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery or any other surgical procedure to correct refractive error are NOT eligible for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot. A self-screening medical declaration must be submitted at the application stage. Downloadable medical reports (Annexure VIII A & VIII B), duly signed by an Eye Specialist and General Physician from a Central/State Government Hospital or Medical College, must be submitted on CBAT exam day.
Selection Process
The selection of candidates for the Assistant Loco Pilot post happens through the following stages:
- Stage 1 – CBT-1 (Screening Exam): Objective type MCQs (75 questions, 60 minutes). Qualifying in nature. Normalization of marks applies for multiple shifts. Candidates equal to 15 times the vacancies will be shortlisted for CBT-2.
- Stage 2 – CBT-2 (Merit Deciding): Consists of Part A (100 questions, 90 mins – merit) and Part B (75 questions, 60 mins – qualifying, 35%). Only Part A marks count for shortlisting, provided the candidate qualifies Part B.
- Stage 3 – Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Candidates equal to 8 times the vacancies will be shortlisted. Qualifying in nature. Candidates must secure a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery. No negative marking. Conducted in English and Hindi only.
- Stage 4 – Document Verification (DV): Based on combined merit of CBT-2 Part A (50% weightage) and CBAT (50% weightage). Candidates equal to the number of vacancies are called for DV. Original certificates must be produced.
- Stage 5 – Medical Examination (A-1 Standard): Candidates must pass the stringent A-1 medical fitness test conducted by the Railway Administration. Visual acuity is strictly tested. LASIK surgery candidates are not eligible.
Final Merit List: The final merit list is prepared RRB-wise based on the combined scores of CBT-2 Part-A (50% weightage) and CBAT scores (50% weightage). In case of a tie, the older candidate is given higher merit; if age is the same, alphabetical order of the given name is used.
