SSC CHSL Exam Overview 2026

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) Examination to recruit candidates for Group 'C' posts such as Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO) in various Ministries/Departments/Offices. SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria 2026 (Expected)

1. Nationality / Citizenship

A candidate must be either a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries, etc., with the intention of permanently settling in India.

2. Educational Qualification

  • For LDC/JSA and DEO/DEO Grade 'A' (except specific ministries): Candidates must have passed the 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • For DEO/DEO Grade 'A' in Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture, and SSC: 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

3. Age Limit

The expected age limit for SSC CHSL is 18 to 27 years as on the crucial date mentioned in the notification. Age relaxation is provided to reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen) as per Government of India norms.

SSC CHSL Pay Scale & Salary Structure

Selected candidates will be appointed under different Pay Levels as per the 7th Pay Commission, depending on the post. The basic pay includes additional allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA).

SSC CHSL Exam Pattern (Tier 2)

The SSC CHSL Tier 2 is the merit-deciding exam. It consists of Objective Multiple Choice Questions (Session-I) and a Skill Test / Typing Test (Session-II).

5. Computer Knowledge

  • Computer Basics: CPU, input/output devices, computer memory, Windows Explorer, Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Software: Windows Operating System, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Internet and e-mails: Web Browsing, Searching, Managing E-mail Account, e-Banking.
  • Networking and cyber security: Networking devices, protocols, threats (hacking, virus, etc.) and preventive measures.

SSC CHSL Selection Process 2026

The selection of candidates for CHSL posts is done through the following stages:

  • Stage 1: Tier 1 (Computer Based Exam) - Objective type MCQs. Qualifying in nature.
  • Stage 2: Tier 2 (Computer Based Exam) - Includes Objective MCQs (Session-I) and Skill Test/Typing Test (Session-II). Merit is prepared based on aggregate marks scored in Section-I & Section-II of Tier-II, subject to qualifying Section-III & Section-IV.
  • Stage 3: Document Verification (DV) - Shortlisted candidates are required to appear for document verification with their original certificates.

How to Apply for SSC CHSL 2026?

Candidates can apply online (dates to be notified) through the official SSC website. Follow these steps to successfully submit the application form:

  1. Visit the official website: ssc.gov.in.
  2. Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) process if you are a new user.
  3. Log in using your Registration Number and Password.
  4. Fill in the SSC CHSL application form with educational and personal details.
  5. Capture/upload your live photograph and scanned signature in the prescribed format.

Application Form Correction Window

The Commission will typically provide a correction window of 2-3 days after the closing date of applications. Candidates can correct/modify their online application parameters by paying a uniform correction charge of Rs. 200/- for the first modification and Rs. 500/- for the second modification.

Aadhaar Authentication

Candidates can voluntarily use Aadhaar Based Biometric Authentication during OTR. Non-Aadhaar candidates must upload valid Name, DOB, Address, and Gender proof documents and must report to the examination centre 2 hours before the scheduled time.
